Handcrafted maple wood sculpture of the renowned “Our Lady of Loreto. The distinguishing dark face of this image of Holy Mary can be traced back to two stories: the dust from the candle that blackened the original sculpture, or “Black am I, yet beautiful” – looking at the biblical text that the Song of Songs (1, 5f.) handed down.
The Holy Mary of Loreto, after which the famous sanctuary is named, is one of the most venerated Marian statues in the world, like Our Lady of Lourdes and the one of Fatima.
This famous place of devotion rises above the building of the house of Holy Mary of Nazareth, which according to tradition was brought to Loreto by angels.
A single white robe covers both Holy Mary and Jesus. In one hand, Jesus child holds a golden ball representing the world, with the other one he’s giving blessings.
Golden crowns adorn their heads to indicate their majesty.
